AI Assistant (MCP)
Let an AI assistant (Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor) edit your site’s pages, layout and styling just by asking. It connects through a secure MCP (Model Context Protocol) connection and signs in as you, so it can only do what your account can do.
- Page content edits are saved as drafts for you to review: nothing in a draft goes live until you preview and press Publish.
- Theme changes apply live, but the assistant must ask you first and pass a confirmation. Page titles and menu settings also apply immediately. Every change is in the Audit Log.
- It can import images to your site.
- It can’t publish pages, delete pages, or touch orders, customers, payments or settings.
1. Turn it on
AI assistant connections are off by default, and turning them on takes two steps. First your platform administrator makes the AI assistant available to your site, on request. Until then it doesn’t appear in your admin at all. Then a site administrator who can change Configuration (an Admin) turns it on under Admin → Site → AI assistant (a tab in the Site area). Other staff see whether it’s on there.
- Ask your platform administrator to make the AI assistant available for your site.
- Go to Admin → Site → AI assistant and switch on Allow AI assistant connections.
- Copy your connection URL. It looks like
https://your-shop-domain.com/api/mcp. Always use your shop’s own domain.
Admins and Content Editors can connect once it’s on. Turning it off (or the platform administrator making it unavailable) immediately disconnects every assistant. After it’s back on, everyone reconnects.
2. Connect your assistant
Each connection sends you to your own site to sign in and approve access. Check the address bar shows your shop’s domain before signing in.
On the approval screen, Claude (claude.ai) and ChatGPT (chatgpt.com) show as verified apps. Cursor and other apps that register themselves show an Unverified app — name chosen by its developer badge. That’s expected. Always check the You’ll be sent back to <host> line before you allow access.
Claude (claude.ai and Claude Desktop)
- Open Settings → Connectors and click Add custom connector.
- Name it (e.g.
Blue Reef Website) and paste your connection URL. - Click Add, then Connect. Sign in to your shop and click Allow.
- In a chat, open the tools / connectors menu and make sure your shop’s connector is on.
Custom connectors are available on Claude’s paid plans. On Team & Enterprise, an organisation Owner adds the connector first; each person then clicks Connect. Claude Desktop uses the same connectors as claude.ai.
Claude Code (terminal)
claude mcp add --transport http my-shop https://your-shop-domain.com/api/mcp
Then run /mcp in Claude Code, pick my-shop, and finish signing in in your browser.
ChatGPT
- Open Settings → Apps & Connectors (older versions: Connectors).
- Under Advanced settings, switch on Developer mode.
- Back in Apps & Connectors, click Create.
- Enter a name, the description “Edits the pages, layout and theme of my dive shop website (page edits saved as drafts).”, your connection URL, and choose OAuth.
- Click Create, sign in to your shop and click Allow.
- In a new chat, choose Developer mode from the tools menu and select your connector.
Developer mode is available on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans (a workspace admin may need to allow it). ChatGPT asks you to confirm each change, so read the summary, then approve. OpenAI moves these menus occasionally; search its help centre for “developer mode connectors” if you can’t find them.
Cursor
Add this to ~/.cursor/mcp.json (all projects) or .cursor/mcp.json (one project):
{
"mcpServers": {
"my-shop": { "url": "https://your-shop-domain.com/api/mcp" }
}
}Open Cursor Settings → MCP and click Login / Connect next to your shop.
3. What to ask
- “Give me an overview of my website: which pages exist and what’s on the homepage?”
- “Rewrite the homepage hero to focus on our new nitrox courses and give me a preview link.”
- “Add a three-column card section under the hero for Courses, Trips and Equipment Service.”
- “Move the contact section above the announcements.”
- “Create an ‘About Us’ page from this text: … and add it to the menu.”
- “Translate all the homepage text to French.” (needs French enabled)
- “Suggest a theme with rounder corners and bolder headings that still passes contrast checks. Show me the changes before applying them.”
- “Add the next 4 upcoming specialty courses to the homepage as cards.”
- “Put our store hours and the agencies we teach for on the contact page.”
- “Show only in-stock fins in a product grid on the Scuba Diving page.”
Your site’s built-in pages (Home, Scuba Diving, Dive Courses, Contact Us…) are always there. If your site was set up before the page editor existed, they’re created from your current content the first time you or the assistant open them, with nothing to run first. Pages for a section you’ve turned off are still listed and editable, but visitors won’t see them until you turn the section on.
Ask for a preview link after changes (valid 30 minutes). Photos have to be uploaded to your site: give the assistant a public image link and it imports it for you (https only, up to 10 MB, PNG, JPEG, WebP or GIF; SVG isn’t supported). Live blocks (upcoming sessions, course lists, product grids, staff, services, store hours and more) show your live data and can go on any page; the assistant sets what they show, and the data itself is edited in its own admin screen.
4. Review & publish
- Go to Admin → Site → Pages. Pages with unpublished changes show an Unpublished changes badge (or “N unpublished”), and AI changes say so (e.g. “Changed via AI assistant by Alex”).
- Click Preview to see the page exactly as visitors will.
- Click Publish to go live, or Discard draft to throw the changes away.
- Changed your mind? Open History and restore an earlier version. It loads into the draft for you to check first.
5. Manage connections
Admin → Site → AI assistant → Connected apps lists every connected assistant, who connected it and when it was last used. Click Revoke to disconnect one. To disconnect everything at once, a site administrator can switch Allow AI assistant connections off.
Troubleshooting
- “Forbidden” / “AI assistant connections are turned off for this site” (HTTP 403): the feature is off for your site. If Admin → Site → AI assistant is there, a site administrator can switch it on; if it isn’t, ask your platform administrator to make it available.
- Connector won’t add / not found: check the URL uses your shop’s own domain and ends in
/api/mcp. - Sign-in says you don’t have access: your role can’t edit site content. Ask an Admin for the Content Editor role.
- Can’t change the theme: theme changes need the Branding permission (Admin or Content Editor).
- “Too many requests”: wait a minute. Each person is limited to 60 changes per minute and 600 calls per hour, shared across their connected apps. Batch requests aren’t supported.
- Changes don’t appear on the site: block edits are drafts. Preview, then Publish.
- Stopped working after it was switched off and on: reconnect. Switching it off disconnects everyone.
